This is an edited version of a lesson from our online counselling course
It consist of quotes from many different sources, strung together by comments of our own
“Everything that does not come from integrity”
In higher consciousness there is no unconscious,
In ego consciousness, there is a lot of unconsciousness.
This has practical implications, because a conclusion is that “just” recalling past traumas etc is in fact not necessarily a good thing, they have never ceased to affect us. What is needed is an integrity and maturity that allows us to face these events squarely, without being swallowed by the attitudes to life they harboured. (“because dad did not love me, I am not lovable”)
This thus leads to a good working definition of what the unconscious is: “Everything that does not come from integrity”
An important exception from the emphasis on the unconscious is in Gestalt therapy
Perls rejected any notion of an unconscious mind, preferring to think of the personality as a rubber ball floating and turning in the water, so that only one portion is visible at a time. The Gestalt therapist works with the portion that is visible in the context of the moment.
So instead of trying to trace a symptom back to some childhood trauma, as is done for example in psychoanalysis, he always asks the person what it is “doing for him” in the here and now.
Dr. Ann Faraday: Dream Power p.143 ff
Everything that does not come from integrity contains unconscious material and thus projections
Not coming from integrity, means that we do a bad job at helping or integrating what needs to be helped or integrated, but there are more subtle risks
Projection happens every time we do not own our integrity fully, every time we are not truly honest to our own being, regardless if we are conscious of it or not.
Projections in other words, happen all the time!
Working with projection is the cornerstone in all development
Nothing else is necessary for development, than identification and transformation of projections.
Working with projections is the road to
There is no difference in the subject matter regardless if we work with a beginner, that do not want truth, just more fun out of life, and the serious seeker, that wants truth – all needs to work with their projections.
If we could see through all our projections down to the last traces, our personality would be extended to cosmic dimensions.
Marie Louise von Franz
The Law of projection: Anything in the unconscious is projected! (C. G. Jung)
If somebody exhibits a personality trait we ourself harbour unconsciously - and which we like
We like this person.
If somebody exhibits a personality trait we ourselves harbour unconsciously - and which we dislike
We dislike that person.
Projection and emotion
If there is emotion there is projection
This does not mean that if there is not emotion you agree with what the other does,
But if you for example disagree, you will feel compassion, not anger etc.
How can we work with projections?
Different people will benefit from different ways of working
A habit pattern
To live, move and have one’s being within an attitude
"An individual experiencing temporary fear, grief or anger, all too often carries his body in an attitude of that muscular emotion. If he persists in this dramatisation or consistently re-establishes it, thus forming what is ordinarily referred to as a "habit pattern", the muscular arrangement becomes set.
Materially speaking, some muscles shorten and thicken, others are invaded by connective tissue, still others become immobilised by consolidation of the tissue involved. Once this has happened, the physical attitude is invariable; it is involuntary; it can no longer be changed basically by taking thought or even mental suggestion.
Now what the individual feels is no longer an emotion, a response to an immediate situation; henceforth he lives, moves and has his being in an attitude."
Dr. Ida Rolf: "Structural Integration" (Here from "Bodymind"
Don’t wait for a catastrophe to happen
Suppression […] is the house where you go on throwing into the basement things that you want to do but you cannot because of social conditions culture, civilisation.
But they go on collecting there, and they affect your actions, your life, very indirectly. Directly, they cannot face you - you have forced them into darkness, but from the dark side they go on influencing your behaviour. They are dangerous, it is dangerous to keep all those inhibitions inside you.
It is possible that these are the things that comes to a climax when a person goes insane. Insanity is nothing but all these suppressions coming to a point where you cannot control them any more”. […] “The real message […] is to find a healing outlet for this potential explosion. It is essential to find a way to realise whatever tensions and stresses might build up inside you right now. Beat a pillow, jump up and down, go out into the wilderness and scream at the empty sky - anything to shake up your energy and allow it to circulate freely. Don’t wait for a catastrophe to happen.”

“Unless you drop your personality you will not be able to find your individuality. Individuality is given by existence; personality is imposed by society. Personality is social convenience. Society cannot tolerate individuality, because individuality will not follow like a sheep. Individuality has the quality of the lion; the lion moves alone.
The sheep are always in the crowd, hoping that being in the crowd will feel cosy. Being in the crowd one feels more protected, secure.
If somebody attacks there is every possibility in a crowd to save ourself. But alone? - Only the lions move alone.
And every one of you is born a lion, but the society goes on conditioning you, programming your mind as a sheep. It gives you a personality, a cosy personality, nice, very convenient, very obedient. Society wants slaves, not people who are absolutely dedicated to freedom. Society wants slaves because all the vested interests want obedience.”
